The knights in wooden sets are usually hand-carved, accounting for half the cost of the set.
Sometimes they are made of boxwood and stained or painted black, brown, or red. Black wooden pieces are made of a dark wood such as rosewood, ebony, red sandalwood, African Padauk wood ( African padauk which is similar to red sandalwood and is marketed as Bud Rosewood or Blood Red Rosewood) or walnut. Wooden White chess pieces are normally made of a light wood, boxwood, or sometimes maple. The first Staunton style sets were made in 1849 by Jaques of London (also known as John Jaques of London and Jaques and Son of London) ( Just & Burg 2003:225) harvcol error: no target: CITEREFJustBurg2003 ( help). Chess sets are available in a variety of designs, the most known being the Staunton design, named after Howard Staunton, a 19th-century English chess player, and designed by Nathaniel Cooke. For example, a set of pieces designed for a chessboard with 2.25 inches (57 mm) squares typically have a king around 3.75 inches (95 mm) tall. Ĭhess pieces used for play are usually figurines that are taller than they are wide. Some works of art are designs of chess sets, such as the modernist chess set by chess enthusiast and dadaist Man Ray, that is on display in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Themed designs are generally intended for display purposes rather than actual play ( Hooper & Whyld 1992:76) harvcol error: no target: CITEREFHooperWhyld1992 ( help). The variety of designs available is broad, from small cosmetic changes to highly abstract representations, to themed designs such as those that emulate the drawings from the works of Lewis Carroll, or modern treatments such as Star Trek or The Simpsons. Nick Bolton, Co-Founder of Electric Corby CIC said, “Being a part of this project is a big win for Electric Corby and the local community, putting Corby once again at the leading edge in sustainability and innovation. The unique renewable heating system in Corby will store thermal energy generated from PV-T panels underground using an innovative Earth Energy Bank. These homes will include townhouses, 3- and 4-bedroom homes, and apartments, which will allow this renewable heating system to be trialled in a variety of house types. Corby will be receiving funding for the renewable equipment in 47 homes that will be built as part of the Glendale Project in Priors Hall Park. This will aim to balance local energy supply and demand through methods such as activating the heat pumps during periods of low energy demand.Ĭorby will act as one of the three demonstration locations, alongs Manlleu and Sant Cugat del Vallès in Spain. Not only will the project be involved in the construction and monitoring of three pilot sites to determine the efficiency and success of the combination of the renewable heating system, but a smart control and management system will be developed for the project. Therefore it is essential that we provide buildings with renewable heat and hot water.įor the CHESS-SETUP, this will stem from an innovative combination of solar thermal energy production, heat storage and heat pump use. The reasons for the project lie in the fact that heating accounts for a significant proportion of the total energy demand in Europe – 60% of energy in the building sector is used for space heating and domestic hot water. CHESS-SETUP is a Horizon 2020 project that aims to implement a reliable and efficient heating system that will be able to supply buildings via renewable energy sources.Įlectric Corby CIC is one of 10 partner organisations from across Europe with Corby set to work with partners in Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland on the new CHESS-SETUP project (CHESS-SETUP being short for Combined HEat Sy Stem by using Solar Energy and hea T p Um Ps).
